Many famous people have filed bankruptcy and gone on to be extremely successful.

Hi, I’m August Bullock, a bankruptcy attorney in Chico and Butte County.  I have helped thousands of people get a fresh start and by solving their financial problems since I became a bankruptcy lawyer back in 1988.

My clients throughout the years have confided in me a similar narrative:  They confess that they feel awful, that  they never expected to file bankruptcy, and didn’t want to do it. They often have a lot of lot of embarrassment and distress about the chapter 7 and chapter 13 bankruptcy procedures.

While I sincerely empathize with how you feel, you should try to remember these unpleasant feelings are not entirely rational.

In the first place, bankruptcy is not as calamitous as you think. Clients often think their credit rating will be impaired indefinitely, but this not correct.

In addition, multitudes of bankruptcies are filed every year. You probably have many friends, coworkers, neighbors and acquaintances who have filed but never told you. In 2010 1.5 million people filed bankruptcy nationally- on out of 212 people. The number has declined a bit in the supposed “recovery” 1,17 million in 2013, 1.03 million in 2014, and under a million in 2015- but millions of homeowners are still underwater in their homes and wages have risen very little in the last twenty years. Rising rents are causing many people financial headaches. If history is a guide, another recession in the near future is very likely.

Third: Many famous people have filed bankruptcy but then became extremely successful. Abraham Lincoln became insolvent when he was a young man, but later became one of our greatest presidents. Several of Donald Trump’s businesses filed, but he still claims to be worth ten billion dollars. Willie Nelson, a fabulous songwriter and singer, discharged 16 million dollars in income taxes through bankruptcy. Rock star Tom Petty also filed bankruptcy, extracted himself from a recording contract, and was able to keep all the profits from his huge hit “Damn the Torpedoes.” Ed McMahon, Johnny Carson’s sidekick, saved his home from foreclosure. Talk show host Larry King, boxer Mike Tyson, and hip hop artist MC Hammer have all filed. Walt Disney’s first company filed bankruptcy, and he went on to create the multibillion dollar global enterprise that exists today. Even Henry Ford’s first company filed before he transformed the auto industry.

Many well known giant corporations have filed.  The bankruptcies of Enron, GM, Lehman Brothers, Kodak, Hostess foods, Saab, American Airlines, MF Global, and Borders Books have made headlines, but there are innumerable more.

Bankruptcy is an honorable solution that allows people to start over. Clients are often able to keep all of their property and all or most of their property.

I hope this video will remind you things are really not as bad as they seem. Once you make up your mind to change your life you will feel greatly relieved. You will realize the future is still bright, and there are many opportunities on the road ahead.

Bankruptcy since 1988
I have been a bankruptcy lawyer since 1988. This is my yellow page ad back them. The Dow was 2,168, a gallon of gas was 98 cents, Ronald Reagan was president, and I had only a few gray hairs.
